The Blue Water Footprint of Extensive Beef Production on Semi-Arid Rangeland over a Full Production Cycle in South Africa

چکیده

Water plays a critical role in beef cattle production. Current methods used to estimate the blue water footprint of are largely based on generic values that do not make provision for different production systems within regions. Total cycle measurements should therefore be considered accurately assess grazing natural rangeland. The aim study was measure intake extensive Bonsmara Marikana Thornveld over full at ARC-Roodeplaat Research Station. Measurements commenced weaning (June 2017) and continued until heifers weaned their first calves approximately 210 days age (July 2019). consumption differed between 21.4 litre per animal day when were still growing 54.3 litres during lactation, relating 6.7% 12.0% live weight. total calculated 27,147 litres.

Assessing the Blue and Green Water Footprint of Lucerne for Milk Production in South Africa

The Global Water Footprint Standard approach was used to calculate the volumetric blue and green water footprint indicator for lucerne production as important feed for dairy cows in a major lucerne production region in South Africa. The degree of sustainability of water use then was assessed by comparing water use to water availability for the region. The results show a volumetric water footpri...

Rangeland management and animal production sustainability under arid and semi arid conditions: Egypt overview

Livestock fodder needs in nearly all developing countries now exceed the sustainable yield of rangelands and other forage resources. In Africa, overgrazing has reduced range productivity virtually everywhere. It is important to provide animals with adequate nutrition to ensure the high productive and reproductive performance. Meanwhile, it is necessary to avoid the deterioration of the pasturel...

The Carbon Footprint of Beef Production

Modern-day agriculture allows the average farmer to produce enough food to feed 125 other people. This is in sharp contrast to the historical agricultural systems exemplified by farming in the 1800s, when each farm could produce only enough food to feed one other family. The global population has increased in line with productivity, yet the rate of increase in meat consumption is greater than t...
